The Anambra State Government has commenced proactive measures to clear waterways and drainage channels across the state ahead of the rainy season.

In a public notice signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Tochukwu Obodogha, the government announced that the exercise, tagged “Operation Clear Your Waterways 3.0,” will begin on Monday, April 27, 2026, across the state.

According to the statement, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that all waterways and drainage systems are free from silt, debris, and waste materials that could obstruct the free flow of rainwater.

The notice emphasized that failure to clear blocked waterways before the onset of heavy rainfall may lead to flooding, erosion, and environmental degradation, posing serious risks to lives and property.

Residents and stakeholders have been enjoined to carry out the exercise within their respective areas, including homes, business premises, and communities. Those specifically mentioned include religious organizations, landlord associations, market unions, motor park operators, and schools.

Other affected groups and locations include streets, estates, churches, mosques, abattoirs, shopping malls, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

The government further directed that all debris removed from drainage channels must be properly disposed of at designated locations and not left on roadsides to avoid secondary pollution.

It warned that failure to comply with the directive will attract appropriate sanctions.
