‎As the world commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls on Sept. 5, the Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the education, health, dignity and economic empowerment of women and girls across the state.
‎
‎Under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the state government has continued to implement people-oriented policies and programmes aimed at improving the wellbeing and opportunities available to women and girls through education, healthcare, skills development and economic empowerment.
‎
‎A major component of the administration’s interventions is its free education policy, which has expanded access to learning and helped reduce financial barriers that could prevent girls from acquiring quality education and developing the skills needed to secure better futures.
‎
‎In the health sector, ongoing reforms have sought to improve access to essential healthcare services, with particular attention to maternal and child health. These interventions are designed to ensure that women and children have access to quality and affordable medical care.
‎
‎Complementing the government’s healthcare initiatives is the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, championed by the Governor’s wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, which places particular emphasis on the health and wellbeing of girls.
‎
‎Through the establishment of sanitary pad banks, menstrual hygiene education and the distribution of sanitary products, the initiative has supported schoolgirls in managing menstruation with greater dignity and confidence while reducing the impact of menstrual challenges on their education.
‎
‎The Healthy Living School Clubs also provide students with knowledge on nutrition, personal hygiene, preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyle practices, equipping them to make informed choices and promote healthy living within their communities.
‎
‎Beyond education and healthcare, women and girls continue to benefit from various empowerment initiatives designed to enhance their skills, promote self-reliance and create opportunities for economic participation. The state government maintains that empowering women and girls remains essential to achieving inclusive development, stronger families and resilient communities.
‎
‎As the global community commemorates indigenous women and girls, Anambra’s interventions underscore the importance of investing in their education, health, dignity and economic opportunities as a pathway to building healthier communities and a more prosperous future.
