The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed reports concerning police presence at St. Faith Anglican Church, Awka, as misleading, warning against narratives that could aggravate tensions surrounding the alleged ecclesiastical dispute.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated this on October 19, while clarifying the circumstances surrounding the deployment of police personnel to the location.
According to the command, the deployment of officers to any location is based on the need to maintain law and order, prevent a breakdown of peace, protect lives and property, and guarantee the safety of everyone involved, regardless of their affiliations or positions in the dispute.
The command stressed that the presence of police personnel should not be construed as support for any party or position in an ecclesiastical disagreement, noting that the Nigeria Police Force remains a neutral institution committed to upholding the law, protecting citizens’ rights, and preventing disputes from escalating into threats to public peace and security.
It consequently called on media organisations, social media users, and other stakeholders to verify information before publication, exercise caution in their reporting, and refrain from circulating narratives that could provoke tensions or worsen divisions within the religious community.
The command reassured Ndi Anambra of its continued commitment to carrying out its constitutional duties professionally and impartially, without fear or favour. It further maintained that it would not allow any disagreement, whether religious or otherwise, to degenerate into a breach of public peace and security.
