ANAMBRA: NSCDC PLEDGES SUPPORT TO STATE MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS, SOCIAL WELFARE IN COMBATING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

The State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde has pledged to partner Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in its mission to halt violence perpetrated against women, children and vulnerable groups in the state.

“This was stated on Tuesday Feb 25, by Commandant Maku when Mrs Chinwe Achugbu, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs representing Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo led stakeholders of various women group on an advocacy visit to the NSCDC State Command Headquarters, Awka.
He expressed his readiness to collaborate with the Ministry to curb heinous crimes against women and children.
“The command is gravely concerned about the alarming rise in cases of sexual assault, physical violence, emotional abuse, child trafficking, and online exploitation, which are compromising the safety and well-being of individuals, particularly within schools, homes, and communities.

”It is our collective moral and legal responsibility to safeguard the well-being and safety of women, children, and other vulnerable populations, ensuring their protection from all manner of exploitation, abuse, and violence.
“In line with our commitment to protecting vulnerable populations, we, as a command in line with our Safe School Project, are fully prepared to partner with your ministry to enhance the welfare and quality of life for women and children across the state,” he said.
Speaking earlier, Mrs Achugbu thanked the state commandant for granting them audience and commended the NSCDC for partnering with the ministry to ensure swift response to Gender – Based Violence cases.
She assured him that the ministry is committed to working closely with the NSCDC to mitigate such cases to the barest minimum.
Also a member of the team, Lady Uba Chinweogo, State Coordinator, Supporters of Good Governance, in her contribution said that the advocacy is in line with the upcoming 2025 International Women’s Day Celebration, which according to her aimed at promoting gender equality, empowerment and good governance.
The visit had in attendance very senior officers of the Command, Deputy Commandant Prominence Ukaobi, 2ic to the state Commandant, Deputy Commandant Akaachia Godwin, Head of Administration Department, Assistant Commandant Ebere Nwufor.
Others were Head of Anti Human Trafficking Unit, SC Sopuru Nwokeji, Head Gender Unit, Okoye Hope Nkiruka, Head, Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV),Unit, Ministry of Women Affairs and Ukaere Chikaku, Women Affairs Department among others.
