The Anambra State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) joined its counterparts across Nigeria to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a heartfelt prayer and thanksgiving service, celebrating the successful end of the year with joy and gratitude.
The event, held at the St. Matthew Catholic Church podium in Amawbia, was themed ‘Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societal Progress’. It brought together persons with disabilities (PWDs) from all 21 local government areas of the state to thank God for the gift of life and resilience, despite the challenges faced throughout the year.
In his address, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, Chairman of JONAPWD Anambra State, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, for their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of PWDs. He particularly praised the recent empowerment initiative that provided grants to support small businesses owned by persons with disabilities, under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This is a reminder that gratitude is a powerful testimony, even in the face of challenges,” Okeke stated. We are alive to see the end of another year. Despite the difficulties we face, we possess strength, resilience, and talents that continue to shine in our families, churches, and communities.”
He emphasized the importance of celebrating the contributions of PWDs in education, business, culture, sports, and governance, while also advocating for inclusive policies that uphold their rights and dignity. Okeke also congratulated Governor Soludo on his re-election, describing it as a confirmation of the people’s trust and confidence in his leadership.
The event featured a health talk by Dr. Mrs. Ifeoma Onujiogu of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who stressed the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles. A team from the Nigerian Red Cross trained participants on proper first aid administration and encouraged them to join Red Cross offices in their respective local government areas.
Highlights of the celebration included a drama presentation by the visually impaired cluster group and a music and dance performance by the deaf cluster group, showcasing the creativity and spirit of the disability community.
JONAPWD and other disability cluster groups used the occasion to call on key stakeholders to begin full enforcement of the Disability Rights Law. They advocated for the creation of accessible infrastructure, the strengthening of the state disability commission, and the expansion of employment and empowerment opportunities for PWDs.
The 2025 IDPD celebration in Anambra was a powerful blend of reflection, advocacy, and celebration, underscoring the vital role of persons with disabilities in building a more inclusive and equitable society.
