Anambra State today, October 15, joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 White Cane Safety Day, a day set aside to celebrate the achievements of persons who are blind and visually impaired and to promote the white cane as a symbol of independence, mobility and safety.

The day also raises awareness about inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunities for persons with visual impairment.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Coordinator of the Nigeria Association of the Blind (NAB), Youth Wing, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Chibuzor Obierika, described the white cane as more than a mobility aid, noting that it represents independence, dignity and the right of blind persons to move freely and participate fully in society.

He called on motorists and other road users to respect the white cane, exercise patience and give blind pedestrians sufficient time and space to cross roads safely.

Comrade Obierika appealed to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, to consider the construction of a pedestrian bridge at Regina Caeli Junction to enhance safety and accessibility for blind persons and other vulnerable road users.

He also acknowledged the Anambra State Government’s commitment to social inclusion and urged sustained efforts to translate inclusive policies into practical improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.
