The Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr Frank Ifeanaeme, has urged residents to seek immediate medical attention when experiencing fainting, elevated body temperature and persistent vomiting during periods of excessive heat, warning that ignoring such symptoms could lead to serious health complications.
Dr Ifeanaeme gave the advice on October 30 during an interview with the Information Health Desk Officer on the health implications of excessive heat.
He explained that prolonged exposure to high temperatures could result in dehydration, heat exhaustion and other medical conditions, particularly when individuals failed to take adequate precautions to protect themselves.

According to him, excessive sweating causes the body to lose water and essential minerals, which could lead to weakness, dizziness, headaches and fainting if the lost fluids are not adequately replenished.
The Hospital Administrator described heatstroke as a serious medical emergency that could become life-threatening if appropriate treatment was not administered promptly. He advised residents to drink sufficient clean water regularly, wear light and comfortable clothing and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Dr Ifeanaeme also encouraged residents to ensure that their homes and workplaces were properly ventilated, take cool baths and seek refuge in shaded or cool environments whenever they experienced discomfort from excessive heat.
He particularly urged outdoor workers, traders, farmers and other individuals whose occupations exposed them to direct sunlight to take regular breaks, remain hydrated and avoid strenuous activities during periods of intense heat.
The Hospital Administrator further advised residents to pay special attention to children, pregnant women, elderly persons and individuals with underlying health conditions, noting that they were more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
Dr Ifeanaeme stressed the importance of recognising unusual symptoms early and seeking professional medical assistance rather than ignoring warning signs or resorting to self-medication.
He maintained that prompt medical attention and appropriate preventive measures were essential to reducing the risks associated with excessive heat and protecting the health and wellbeing of residents.
