ANAMBRA GOVT ISSUES ONE-WEEK ULTIMATUM TO ILLEGAL OCCUPANTS OF SPORTS FACILITIES

By Mokwugwo Ogochukwu

‎The Anambra State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to owners of unauthorized private structures within government-owned sports facilities across the state to vacate the premises or face demolition.

‎The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Patrick-Agha Mba, during a statewide inspection tour of stadia and other sporting facilities.

‎Mr. Mba said the inspection was aimed at assessing the condition of sports infrastructure and identifying facilities in need of urgent rehabilitation and modernization. He stressed that government sports facilities must fulfill their intended purpose, warning that illegal occupants and unauthorized developments would not be tolerated as the state initiates a comprehensive revitalization programme for the sector.

‎According to the Commissioner, the Soludo administration is committed to restoring sports facilities to optimal standards to advance sports development, talent discovery, and youth engagement across the state.

‎Mr. Mba also instructed all legitimate tenants operating within the facilities to remit rents exclusively through approved government platforms under the supervision of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, AIRS.

‎He explained that the directive aligns with the state’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and improved revenue collection, as well as efficient management of public assets. “The reforms are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen internally generated revenue and eliminate leakages in the administration of public facilities,” he stated.

‎Reaffirming commitment to grassroots sports development, the Commissioner disclosed that local government councils would play a key role in identifying and nurturing young sporting talents within their communities. He noted that strategic investment in sports infrastructure and youth-oriented programmes would create opportunities for young people, produce future champions, and position Anambra as a leading hub for sports development in Nigeria.

‎Mr. Mba added that the inspection underscores Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s resolve to restore, modernize, and optimize public sports facilities as part of the administration’s wider agenda for youth empowerment, community development, and sustainable economic growth.
