The Anambra State Physical Planning Board has issued a renewed call for residents to secure proper building approvals before embarking on any construction project.

The Managing Director and Chairman of the Board, Barr. Chike Maduekwe, emphasized that government is intensifying efforts to ensure structural safety and prevent building-related disasters across the state.

According to him, many structures collapse because individuals begin construction without following professional guidelines or obtaining the necessary permits. He warned that building without a structural plan could lead to errors such as erecting houses on waterlines; areas meant for natural water flow thereby putting lives and property at risk.

To address these issues, the Board announced an open window, lasting until February 2026, during which residents can visit the Physical Planning Board to obtain their approved building permits. Those who have already built are also required to present their building plans for inspection. Officials will assess building materials and confirm whether each structure meets safety standards.

Barr. Maduekwe stressed that the government’s intention is not to punish residents but to safeguard the lives of Anambra citizens. He noted: “the government is here to make things easier and to improve lives, not to destroy property”.

The Managing Director also said that the Board has generated ₦739 million from its operations so far and projected that revenue could increase to ₦2 billion if compliance continues to improve. He added that the Anambra State Government is working hard to enhance development across several sectors.

For the current fiscal year, the Anambra State Physical Planning Board received an approved budget of ₦853,363,056 to support its activities.

Barr. Maduekwe urged all residents to take advantage of the current open window and obtain building approvals before any construction begins. He reiterated that the upcoming enforcement exercise, tagged “Operation Show Your Building Permit,” will require every builder to present an approved permit before putting up any structure.
