The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill amending the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024.
The executive bill, which scaled its first, second, and third readings during plenary in Awka, was presented by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Jude Akpua, representing Njikoka II Constituency, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, representing Nnewi South II Constituency.
The amendment specifically revised Section 101 of the principal law through the insertion of a new provision and the subsequent renumbering of other sections.
Under the amended section, legal representation of local governments in all court proceedings is to be handled by lawyers from the Ministry of Justice assigned by the Attorney General of the state.
The provision, however, allows a local government, subject to the approval of the Attorney General, to engage private legal practitioners outside the Ministry of Justice to represent it in court where necessary.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the plenary, formally passed the amendment into law.
The House thereafter adjourned its sitting to April 30.
