ANAMBRA 35TH ANNIVERSARY TO SPOTLIGHT ENVIRONMENT AS ANSEC APPROVES COOPERATIVE FRAMEWORK

‎The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has approved a series of measures aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, economic development and governance as the state prepares to mark its 35th anniversary. The decisions were reached at the Council’s 10th meeting of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s second term, held on Aug. 24, at the Light House, Awka.

‎Anambra State will mark 35 years of its creation on Aug. 27, under the theme, “Our Environment, Our Future.” According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, the anniversary celebration will focus on efforts to build a clean and green Anambra while drawing attention to environmental challenges facing the state.

‎He said major activities for the anniversary would include a tree-planting campaign and a media chat with Governor Soludo. The council also approved a regulatory framework for cooperatives in the state, aimed at establishing minimum operational standards for viability, scalability and protection of members’ investments.

‎The framework, according to the statement, would strengthen the Cooperative Federation of Anambra State (COFAS) in carrying out its responsibilities and promote more organised contributions by cooperatives to the state’s economic growth.
‎
‎On governance, ANSEC admonished political office holders and other members of government to exercise power responsibly and with restraint.
‎The council stressed that political power should be used for public purposes and the common good, in accordance with democratic principles, and should not be abused.
‎
‎The economics of the proposed Anambra Aerotropolis was also reviewed, with the project described as an export emporium and economic gateway to eastern Nigeria.
‎The Aerotropolis is expected to accommodate the Anambra Mixed-use Industrial City (AMIC), alongside an entertainment hub, within the state’s free trade zone.
‎
‎The council further reviewed progress on the regeneration and modernisation of markets across the state, expressing satisfaction with the pace of work.
‎It noted that the ongoing regeneration of Onitsha Main Market remains on course for delivery and is expected to serve as a model for similar projects in other parts of the state.
‎
‎ANSEC said the foundational steps involved in the market regeneration programme, though demanding, were necessary to prevent Anambra from descending into a chaotic urban slum and to advance the state’s vision of a clean, green and smart megacity.
‎
‎The commissioner said the decisions reflected the administration’s continued commitment to sustainable development, economic transformation and responsible governance in Anambra State.
