The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has warned tipper owners and drivers operating in the state to comply strictly with environmental regulations or face appropriate sanctions.
Aguiyi issued the warning on Sept. 2 when the Aguleri Route Tipper Drivers Association (ARTDA), Anambra State, led by its leader, Mr. Onyebuchi Nwogbo, paid him a courtesy visit in his office to discuss responsible operations, environmental compliance and possible collaboration with the Ministry.
The commissioner commended the association for its willingness to partner with the government and directed its members to ensure that sand, stone, laterite and other materials transported in their trucks are properly covered with tarpaulin or polythene. He explained that transporting uncovered materials could lead to spillage on roads, endanger other road users and contribute to environmental pollution.
Aguiyi also cautioned the operators against engaging in, facilitating or supporting illegal mining activities, stressing that indiscriminate extraction of earth materials contributes to soil degradation, land instability and the worsening erosion challenge in Anambra. He urged tipper operators to regard themselves not only as business operators but also as environmental stakeholders capable of helping to protect the state’s natural environment.
The commissioner encouraged them to report cases of illegal mining and other environmental violations encountered in the course of their operations. According to him, environmental protection requires the collective efforts of government, businesses, communities and individuals.
Aguiyi warned that the ministry would not tolerate activities that undermine environmental sustainability, noting that the state government had established task forces to monitor and curb environmental violations, particularly in the extractive and haulage sectors. He stressed that operators found violating environmental regulations would be held accountable and made to face the consequences of their actions.
Aguiyi also reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with responsible stakeholders, stressing that constructive partnerships were essential to achieving the government’s vision of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Anambra State.
Responding, members of the association pledged their support for the policies and environmental initiatives of the Anambra State Government. They acknowledged that environmental degradation has far-reaching effects on businesses, communities, infrastructure and livelihoods.
