The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, on Aug. 22 has led an inspection of environmental sanitation activities across Onitsha and adjoining communities as the state government commenced its emergency sanitation exercise.
The inspection covered major environmental hotspots in Onitsha North and South, Idemili North and Ogbaru Local Government Areas, including Onitsha Head Bridge, Onitsha-Owerri Road, Upper Iweka, Obosi and Nkpor.

The areas have continued to face challenges associated with flooding, erosion and waste accumulation, prompting the state government to intensify sanitation and waste management efforts.
At the Onitsha Head Bridge, Aguiyi inspected a sanitation exercise sponsored by Crystal Garden Estate under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, following its Public Private Partnership with the Ministry of Environment.
Workers were engaged in desilting drainage channels and evacuating accumulated waste, with trucks deployed to support the operation.
The commissioner commended the initiative and urged more organisations, businesses and individuals to support environmental sanitation by adopting communities and public spaces.
He also inspected sanitation and waste management operations in other affected areas, noting areas of compliance while stressing the need for sustained efforts to maintain clean and healthy surroundings.
Aguiyi charged local government chairmen to take ownership of sanitation in their respective jurisdictions and ensure that waste evacuation contractors effectively discharged their responsibilities.
He stressed that sanitation must become a lifestyle rather than a periodic exercise, urging residents to keep their surroundings clean, maintain drainage channels and desist from indiscriminate waste disposal.
The commissioner also inspected the Onitsha-Owerri Road dumpsite as part of the state’s broader assessment of waste management and environmental challenges.
Aguiyi reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to building a clean, green and liveable Anambra, saying the emergency sanitation exercise was part of the administration’s sustained efforts to address flooding, erosion and poor waste management.
