The Anambra Capital Territory Development Agency (ACTDA) on June 24, commenced the demolition of illegal structures obstructing natural water channels in Agu-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area(LGA), as part of efforts to address persistent flooding in the area.

The exercise, which began this week, is focused on structures located behind Ikenga Layout, along the BarnHill Hotels axis, and on Lion House Street, off St. Thomas Aquinas Road.

Speaking during the operation, officials of the agency said the affected structures were identified as major impediments to the free flow of stormwater, contributing significantly to recurrent flooding that has displaced residents and destroyed property during the rainy season.

According to the officials, the intervention aligns with the urban renewal and environmental sustainability agenda of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.

“ACTDA is taking decisive steps to remove all barriers to proper water flow in Agu-Awka and restore effective drainage infrastructure to safeguard lives and property,” an official said.

The agency also disclosed plans to complete the long abandoned drainage channel project within the affected corridor, describing it as a critical component of a long term solution to flooding in the community.

Residents were urged to support the initiative by reporting blocked drainage channels, illegal developments and other activities capable of obstructing water flow for prompt action by the agency.

Reports can be made through ACTDA’s dedicated hotline: 07039650429.

Reaffirming its commitment to environmental management and urban development, the agency pledged to continue implementing measures aimed at keeping the state capital clean, safe and resilient against flooding.
