The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned three suspects before the Gender Magistrate Court in Awka over separate cases of alleged sexual and gender-based violence.
The command disclosed this in a statement issued on July 15 by its Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noting that investigations into the cases had been concluded before the suspects were brought before the court.
According to the statement, Ikenna Mojekwu was arraigned on a charge of alleged incest after he was accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with his 14-year-old daughter in Aguluzoigbo.
Also arraigned was Chibuike Ikemelu, who is facing a charge of alleged unlawful sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl, an act said to have resulted in pregnancy in Abatete. The third defendant, Chukwuma Emenike, 16, was charged with the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in Umuoji.
The court ordered that the three defendants be remanded pending the determination of their cases and adjourned the matters to later dates for the continuation of hearing.
Restating its resolve to combat sexual and gender-based violence, the police command pledged to sustain the diligent investigation and prosecution of such offences across the state.
The command also encouraged victims and members of the public to promptly report incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, assuring that every complaint would receive prompt attention, while the rights of victims would be protected and due process strictly upheld.
