The popular Abuja Park, at the Upper Iweka area of the city venue for the flag off was filled up as residents and business operators in the densely populated commercial city of Onitsha turned out enmasse for the exercise and to receive the governor.
Accompanied by his deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke and other top state officials, performed the symbolic clearing of refuse heaps at the Abuja park area.
The governor said his administration was committed to making Anambra the cleanest state in the country.
He said the initiative which kicked off in June at the State Capital, would take him and the entourage to Nnewi next, to sustain the awareness on the need for residents of the state to imbibe healthy environmental habits.
Gov Obiano called on the citizenry to key into the initiative and de-silt drainages in their premises and ensure proper disposal of all waste.
From the Upper Iweka area, the governor and team moved down through Silas Works Rd and Ziks avenue, Fegge to Mbonu Ojike street where members of the Boys Scout Association of Nigeria and some government functionaries were seen clearing refuse.
No receptacle was sited along the entire street as the drainages were filled with filth and dirty stagnant water.
Gov Obiano urged the Ministry of Environment to deploy receptacles immediately to the area, as none was sited along the entire street and the drainages were filled with filth and dirty stagnant water.
The governor reminded the residents that they can avoid a lot of illnesses when they imbibe the habit of cleanliness.
Some residents of the area including Messres Steve Okoh, Stella Mbogu, Ceceilia Agbo and SundayOnyeoziri described the clean up initiative as commendable. They appealed for government support through provision of the necessary clearing implements for effective sanitation.
