Awka, June 12, 2019 (MOI) Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) says it will procure more operational vehicles for efficient waste evacuation in various parts of the state.

Managing Director, ASWAMA, Mr Amechi Akora, said this during interactive session with executive members of Anambra State Street Traders Welfare Association (ASTWA) in his office at the Government House, Awka.

Mr Akora noted that working with more vehicles would improve the services of the agency and also facilitate prompt evacuation of wastes.

``Our priority is to rid the cities in the state of refuse. We plan to embark on house to house waste collection in order to reduce refuse on our streets.

``Part of the plan is that we are going to map out time and days for waste collection in various areas, so that people will be aware when to bring out their refuse for evacuation.

``Let us imbibe the virtue of proper waste disposal by bagging refuse properly before disposing. We should always bear in mind that everybody has a role to play in maintenance of clean environment.

``We should take cognisance of the fact that the rainy season is here and there is urgent need for drainage channels to be free in order to stem flood disasters,’’ Akora said

While describing waste management as capital intensive, he called for prompt payment of sanitation levy to enable them to function optimally

The MD condemned the attitude of illegal collection, noting that government would not tolerate such illegal practices. (MOI)
