ASUWAHC INTENSIFIES WATER INFRASTRUCTURE REFORMS, RECORDS PROGRESS IN ONITSHA WATER PROJECTS

The Anambra State Urban Water Assets Holding Corporation (ASUWAHC) has intensified efforts to reform and strengthen water infrastructure across the state, unveiling new operational strategies while recording significant progress in the rehabilitation of key water facilities in the Onitsha Zone.
This was highlighted during the corporation’s third management meeting, where the Officer-in-Charge, Mrs Nneka Emmanuella Okafor emphasized the need for greater accountability and improved service delivery. Key directives issued at the meeting included regular inspections of major water schemes, submission of weekly performance reports, expansion of the customer database, increased public awareness campaigns, and accelerated implementation of the State Water Master Plan.
Zonal heads were instructed to enhance monitoring and inspection activities, issue necessary notices to consumers, and strengthen customer relations. Departments were also tasked with improving operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Meanwhile, notable progress has been recorded in the Onitsha Zone, where rehabilitation works are ongoing at the Terminal Reservoir and Army Barracks Water Scheme, Crash Program Owelle Ebo, and the G.R.A Package System.
According to reports, Ovaman Pumps Limited has successfully restored Boreholes 6 and 7 to operation, while efforts are underway to reactivate Borehole 5. The development is expected to significantly boost water production and supply within the area. Environmental sanitation concerns at the Crash Program site are also being addressed.
Despite the progress, power supply remains a major challenge, with several boreholes still depending largely on solar energy. This has underscored the need for more reliable and sustainable electricity solutions to support water production and distribution.
At the G.R.A Package System, Birsa Water Limited has resumed operations by reconnecting boreholes to the national grid. However, power surge incidents and incomplete distribution networks continue to hamper optimal performance.
Management has therefore urged both service providers to improve operational efficiency, address power-related challenges, and ensure the consistent delivery of potable water to residents.
The ongoing reforms and rehabilitation projects underscore ASUWAHC’s commitment to revitalizing urban water infrastructure, enhancing service delivery, and expanding access to sustainable water supply across Anambra State.
