NNEWI NORTH LG CELEBRATES 2026 BREASTFEEDING WEEK, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

The Nnewi North Local Government Area on 7th August joined the rest of the world to mark the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week with a special event focused on educating mothers and celebrating those who practice exclusive breastfeeding.

Representing the Mayor of Nnewi North, the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Mrs. Ijeoma Okoli, delivered the keynote address. She reiterated the critical importance of breast milk to the health, growth, and wellbeing of every child.

“This week is not just for celebration,” she said. “It is a reminder that breast milk is the first and best food for every baby. It builds immunity, promotes brain development, and strengthens the bond between mother and child.”

The event featured special health talks and teachings for mothers and expectant mothers from health experts. The goal, according to organizers, is to equip mothers with the right knowledge to raise healthy children and reduce infant mortality in the LGA.

In recognition of their efforts, various gift items were distributed to mothers who have demonstrated commitment to breastfeeding their babies. The gesture was aimed at encouraging more women to embrace exclusive breastfeeding.

The celebration drew notable personalities and stakeholders in health and community development. Among them were Prince Jude Osumuo, President General, Nzuko-Ora Nnewi; Hon. Uche Nwokenagu, Supervisor for Health, Nnewi North LGA; Mrs. Modesta Obiageri Ebiem, Director, Primary Health Centre, Nnewi North; Mrs. Judith Chidoluo, Nutrition Focal Person, Nnewi North LG; as well as other health workers, traditional leaders, and community women.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Uche Nwokenagu and Mrs. Ebiem commended the council for prioritizing maternal and child health, while Mrs. Chidoluo emphasized that proper nutrition during breastfeeding is key to a healthier Nnewi North.

The 2026 Breastfeeding Week celebration concluded with a call on fathers, families, and the community to support nursing mothers to ensure every child in Nnewi North gets the best start in life.
