Anambra governance structure proves true Aristotle political theory of over a thousand years. Aristotle said that “If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in the Government to the utmost” Ndi Anambra have been in pursuit of both liberty and equity all through history.
Governance in Anambra State is based on the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which provides for a Three-Tier governance structure of federal, State and local Government each having an executive, legislative and judicial arm.
Since the return of Democratic rule in 1999, Anambra State, like every other State in Nigeria has an executive arm of Government led by an elected Governor, the legislative arm that is made up of the elected members of the house of assembly and the Judiciary headed by the Chief Judge of the State.
Every community in Anambra State has either a traditional ruler or an accepted community leader who discharges some form of Government responsibilities for and on behalf of the people. They are also the male and female president-generals of the town unions, who, working with the traditional rulers or acclaimed community leaders and the town union executives, act on matters affecting the community.
The present administration led by Gov. Willie Obiano has taken special advantage of the uniqueness through its effort to bring governance closer to the people via the 20 million Naira choose your project initiative under which communities decide what infrastructural projects they would want the Government to provide for them.
Under this scheme which is entering it 3rd phase, communities led by their traditional rulers and president-generals meet, debate and decide what project can be executed at not more than 20 million per round for their communities. The community chooses from its indigenes the best person to execute the project while Government provides the funds through a best in-class banking guaranty.
