Awka, May 9, 2021 (MOI) Managing Director, Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Ven. Amaechi Okwuosa has described street trading as a very dangerous and accident-prone activity.

Okwuosa said this in an interview when officers of the Authority were accompanied by Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha brigade) to drive away street traders off the Aroma and Unizik areas of Awka.

The exercise was aimed at safeguarding the lives of Ndi Anambra, who engage in buying and selling on the roads; it was also aimed at decongesting the roads for ease of people and vehicle movements.

“It is the duty of ACTDA to ensure that Awka and environs, assume a look of a perfect state capital in order to attract investors.’’

The ACTDA boss also directed the officers to decongest the pedestrian bridge and remove all unauthorised billboards and posters on the bridge.

He, then, cautioned defaulters to desist from trading and pasting posters on pedestrian bridges, stressing that anyone caught in action in the future would be disciplined to serve as a deterrent to others.  In reaction, a passerby, who gave her name as Madam Eucharia Okolo, applauded the move to keep off roadside traders as she recounted a number of times she witnessed some hawking children and adults being killed by speeding cars in the process.
