Awka, April 2, 2021 (MOI) It was with shock and revulsion that Ndi Anambra and indeed all people of goodwill received news *March 30, attack and disruption by armed hoodlums of a stakeholders political gathering convened by Prof. Chukwuma C Soludo.

Soludo a leading contender for the Anambra State Governorship seat in the gubernatorial election scheduled for Nov. 6.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Chijioke Okoli, SAN, and President, League of Anambra Professional (LAP).

It noted that reports have confirmed the death of three policemen at the hands of the hoodlums and their kidnap of a serving commissioner in Anambra State.

Mr Emeka Ezenwanne, the current Commissioner for Public Utilities in the state was kidnapped by the unknown gunmen, who disrupted proceedings at the venue of the meeting.

LAP regretted this most unfortunate development and would first of all commiserate with families of the slain policemen, the Anambra State Command of the Nigerian Police and the entire Police authority.

“May the souls of the officers who died in active duty, rest in peace and we call on relevant authorities not forget the families they left behind and to ensure prompt payment of all due benefits.

“Our prayers and concerns are also with the kidnapped victim and his undoubtedly traumatised family. We pray for his safe return even as we demand that the security agencies redouble their efforts toward that end.’’

It also said that LAP sympathised with the Isuofia Community for the underserved, unwanted attention it received from the incident and the trauma suffered.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this brazen assault on not only the Isuofia community and Anambra State but on civilised human interaction.’’

LAP noted that the exact motives of the masterminds of the attack have yet to be disclosed but suffice it to say that the circumstances, time and space suggest political motivation.

“It is for this that we call on all the gubernatorial candidates to publicly denounce in uncompromising terms the dastardly attack on Prof. Soludo and affirm subscription to non-violence and politics without bitterness as they go about selling their respective candidacies.’’

“As for Prof. Soludo, we sympathise and ask him not to be intimidated at all by forces of darkness. LAP’s goal is for the best candidate to emerge Anambra State Governor from the coming election and this cannot be achieved if the field is unduly narrowed by driving away some otherwise worthy candidates.’’

It urged that individuals and communities in the state must be more security-conscious to meet the current challenges, while calling on the Anambra Government and all the security agencies to step up security in the state.

“You must decisively stem the growing tide of brigandage and high incidence of murders in the state in recent weeks. “The Anambra State Governor who is always proud to proclaim his domain as the safest state in the country must rise to the occasion and ensure that he continues to walk his talk,’’ LAP noted.
