Awka, Dec. 25, 2020 (MOI) Anambra State Government through the State Ministry of Health has collaborated with the World Health Organisation, European Union (WHO/EU) to mark the world Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala assured that the state would continue to partner with the WHO/EU in order to achieve UHC in the state.

Dr Okpala gave the assurance during a news briefing to usher in the celebration of UHC Day in the state.

The celebration, marked globally every Dec. 12, marks the anniversary of the United Nations’ historic and unanimous endorsement of UHC in 2012.

According to him, the UHC is aimed at raising the consciousness of countries and societies to the need to provide people access to quality healthcare without suffering financial hardship.  

He noted that the state had concluded plans to enroll no fewer than 28,000 vulnerable residents into Anambra Health Insurance Scheme.

Dr Okpala explained that the occasion provided an opportunity to reflect on the state’s journey toward the achievement of UHC and as well as to acknowledge the support of WHO/EU, UNICEF and other partners.

“The State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has concluded the disbursement of funds to public health facilities under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.’’

He explained that COVID-19 pandemic and its shock to health systems of countries highlighted the importance of UHC

 “We will continue to strengthen our health system so that we can be able to meet the desired goal in the health sector.’’

Executive Secretary Anambra State Health insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr Simeon Onyemaechi said that no fewer than 90,000 residents have been enrolled into the state’s health scheme.

Dr Onyemaechi called on people of the state to enroll in the scheme so as to have access to quality healthcare at minimal financial burden.

Head of Planning, Research and Statistics in the ministry, Mrs Edith Nwachukwu noted that the state had been making efforts in achieving the UHC in the state.

Road walk and sensitisation were also held in the celebration. (MOI)
