Ojoto (Idemili South LGA), April 14, 2021 (MOI) It was pomp and pageantry as Umu Idemili South Local Government Area (LGA) celebrated the 25 years of the creation of the LGA.
At the event, deserving sons selected from each of the seven communities that made up the LGA that had contributed toward the development of their various communities were given awards.
A representative of the LGA at the Anambra Assembly, Chuka Ezenwunne while presenting a merit award to the chief launcher, Chairman, Chief Emeka Agbanari, of Seaman Group of Companies, tasked indigenes of his constituency to emulate Agbanari by investing at home.
“Chief Agbanari is an epitome of `Think Home Philosophy’. He has invested in many of his businesses in the South East, including Idemili South at which he employed many people from the area.
“I urge our illustrious sons at home and in The Diaspora to emulate him by establishing some of their businesses at home; that is the `Akulueuno’ that Gov. Willie Obiano has been preaching about,’’ noted Ezenwunne.
According to Agbanari I am overwhelmed that I among those chosen by my people to cut the Silver Jubilee cake.
“I promise to partner the Idemili South LGA to attract more investments into the area.
“I advise youths to shun violence, shun vote buying. God has promised to bless our hand work and endeavours to make Idemili South greater,’’ said Agbanari.
In an address, Transition Committee Chairman, Mr Don Unachukwu said that the reason for the Silver Jubilee celebration was to thank God and Umu Idemili South LGA for ensuring that the LG was growing from strength to strength.
“We achieved so much because I do not know it all. I am humble enough to bow to superior ideas. We saw the need to celebrate those who contributed to the developments,” he said.
Presenting a paper entitled: “Idemili South Local Government Area: the Journey So Far,’’ Prof. Charity Emelie (Mrs), traced the creation of Idemili South in 1996 to when it had its headquarters was at Oba but now relocated to Ojoto to facilitate more developments at the grassroots.
“Idemili South has fared well but can develop better. The N20 million Community Choose Your Projects by the Government is worthy of mention. We urge the Government to do more.
“Challenges faced by LGA include a lack of funds, unstable tenure of office of the Chairmen because it is by appointment, concentration of power at the state level.
“The current uniform LG system in Nigeria does not suit the culture of the people. The LG should be allowed to perform their statutory functions without Federal or State interference,’’ she said.
The first elected LG Chairman, Mr Sylvia Abasilim, an awardee, under whose tenure most of the infrastructure in the Secretariat were provided, said that it was possible, then, because allocations were coming directly to the LGAs.
The Chairman of the occasion and President-General of Ojoto, Chief Donatus Anozie said that more facilities like High Courts were needed at the Secretariat.
PG of Oba, Rev. Chris Emelie called on State Government to tar more intra community roads and improve the electricity.
“Provide better roads and adequate electricity to the area. The royal fathers present include Igwe Gerald Mbamalu of Ojoto, Igwe Nich Obi of Nnobi. (MOI)
