Awka, Feb. 24, 2021 (MOI) Some of the amputee beneficiaries in Anambra and environs were in joyous mood when wife of the governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano provided them free prosthetic limbs to at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.

The exercise, which started on Feb. 23 is expected to last for two days.

In an interview with the Coordinator–In-Charge of the Free Prosthetic Limbs programme, Lady Mary Ogugua, she explained that it was part of her many philanthropic works.

Lady Ogugua, a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Donor Agencies has been working closely with her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ).

“Mrs Obiano, Mama Anambra is a woman with a kind heart. Her passion to help humanity brought about this free prosthetic limbs programme; she partners IshakToralam Foundation on this.

“She started this exercise in 2014 and no fewer than 2,000 amputees have benefitted from the project.

“This is the 6th year and no fewer than 250 persons were measured for the free limbs earlier in December and they are now stepping forward to collect them,’’ she explained.

Lady Ogugua urged the beneficiaries to do constant practice with limbs in order to get used to them.

Interacting with some of beneficiaries, one Mr Olisa Onunkwo, who hailed from Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area (LGA), a victim of a road accident since 1983 expressed his feelings:

“I feel like one who just got a new wife, because for long I have been without a limb since mine got faulty. I ask God to bless Osodieme for me, I am grateful.’’

Another beneficiary, Mrs Anuri Olise from neighbouring Delta State expressed her gratitude:

“I am from Delta, I heard about the free prosthetic limbs provided by Mrs Obiano on the radio and I decided to come. Behold, I attended even though I’m not from this state.

“I had this accident since 4 years ago but I haven’t been able to afford a prosthetic limb. I pray to God to bless her Osodieme for me.’’

Mr Jude Nnanyelugo from Mbaukwu Awka South LGA, an accident victim also shared his feelings:

“I just regained my confidence since two years that I was involved in an accident.

“I couldn’t afford a prosthetic since then so I am very grateful to Mrs Obiano for her kind gesture toward us and I pray to God to reward her immensely.’’

In a separate reaction, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Disability Matters, Mr Chuks Ezewuzie praised Mrs Obiano for providing prosthetic limbs for amputees in Anambra State consistently for six years.

“I ask beneficiaries to continue to support Gov. Willie Obiano’s administration as he continues to lay down legacies that will stand the test of time.

“Mama Anambra has shown truly just like her husband that she has special love for persons with disabilities in Anambra by restoring joy and hope for these amputees who lost their limbs through accidents and sickness.’’

Lending his own voice, the state chairman of Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, Mr Ugochukwu Ernest Okeke thanked Mrs Obiano for her benevolence.

“The happy look on their faces today shows that these prosthetic limbs are helping to renew their self confidence.’’

No less than 150 amputees have so far received their limbs while the remaining ones are expected to come pick theirs in the programmed days ahead. (MOI)
