Neni (Anaocha LGA), Nov. 27, 2020 (MOI) Property worth millions of naira have been destroyed by fire, following a fallen tanker laden with inflammable products.
The inferno, which occurred on the Nwagu-Ezinano bypass on the Awka-Ekwulobia Road, was caused by a Tanker loaded with Diesel driver, which lost control while descending the slope.
It fell and discharged its content that immediately caught fire.
No life was lost; but property worth millions was damaged by the inferno including the village electricity transformer, shops and buildings.
An eye witness, whose shop was torched, Mr Joseph Ezeego called on the state government to intervene over incessant accidents on the road which he said had claimed many lives.
He noted that a replacement of a barricade on the road could help to stem the accidents involving articulated trucks from plying the road.
Another eyewitness, Mr Chikelue Ezeani, whose shop in the area was affected too, while recounting his losses appealed to the state government, as a matter of urgency to hasten the reactivation of a Fire Service Station built in the area by previous administration but yet to be equipped.
He noted that if the station had been functional, that could have helped a prompt response by the service as this could have averted the extensive damage witnessed.
He, however, cautioned drivers to always ensure that their vehicle were in good condition before putting them on the road as a loss of control on their brakes had always been blamed as cause of accidents on the road.
The Umuowelle Village Chairman, Mr Ozoemena Owoh called on the Government to come to their aid as the only village electricity transformer was destroyed by the fire. He commended the youths and villagers for their help in salvaging some of the property by helping in putting off the fire before the arrival of men of the State Fire Service. (MOI)
