NNEWI COMMUNITY CELEBRATES `AFIA OLU FESTIVAL’

Nnewi (Nnewi North LGA), Aug. 23, 2018 (MOI) Nnewi community in Nnewi North Local Government (LGA), Anambra State has celebrated the `Afia Olu’ festival also known as New Yam Festival.
The festival which is an annual ritual is performed in line with the custom and tradition of the community.
The event attracted prominent sons and daughters of the community at home and in the Diaspora.
All the four autonomous quarters that make up the community; Nnewichi, Otolo, Umudim and Uruagu erupted in joy in various activities in the spirit of the festival.
The Traditional Ruler of the community, Igwe Kenneth Orizu described this year’s celebration as unique, stressing that the theme: ``Economic Development and Unity’’ was chosen to promote peace, and think home philosophy.
Igwe Orizu expressed satisfaction at the relative peace being enjoyed in the community and called for its sustenance to pave way for more development.
He, however, enjoined his people to abide by the norms guiding the festival and cautioned against acts that could undermine the spirit of the annual event.
Earlier, the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi North LGA, Mr Chukwudi Orizu noted that the festival was different compared to the previous years as the four communities came together to celebrate the arrival of the new yam.
``This is a result of the peace that exists in Anambra State since Gov. Willie Obiano assumed office,” he said
He urged the youths to embrace peace and be law abiding in all their endeavours.
The TC Chairman thanked Gov. Obiano for the developmental projects executed in Nnewi under his administration.
