01. POVERTY ERADICATION: AGENCY TRAINS VILLAGE VOLUNTEER CREDIT GROUPS IN ANAMBRA
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Rural Finance Institution Building Programme (RUFIN) has organized a two day training programme for formation of Village Savings Credit Groups in rural communities in Anambra State.
Speaking at the forum organized at the headquarters of the state Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, the State Project Coordinator, Rufin, Mrs Uzoamaka Emeagwali stated that the programme was organized to equip the participants with the skills to mobilize and sensitize rural farmers especially women on accessing agricultural credits from micro finance banks and non-governmental organizations.
Mrs Emeagwali further stated that the programme was designed to reduce poverty in rural communities especially in localities where credit facilities are not easily accessible; pointing out that the volunteer groups would train the rural women on techniques of saving funds for agricultural purposes.
Also speaking at the occasion, Lydia Ameh, a representative of Central Programme Management Unit (CPMU) Rufin, Abuja and a facilitator at the workshop urged participants to diligently disseminate the information and skills they received to the unreached poor rural women, pointing out that they are the vehicles for effecting a change and achieving the state’s goal to eradicate poverty in rural communities.
A participant at the training, Mrs. Okafor Blessing, Chairperson, Ifunaya Women from Anyamelum Local Government Area, urged other participants to successfully step down the training at their various villages as it has great potentials for women,citing herself as a beneficiary of the scheme and has successfully introduced other women to the scheme in Anyamelum local government area.
At the training, participants were taken through various topics such as definition of volunteers, roles and responsibilities of a volunteer, good mobilization and sensitization techniques, good record keeping skills amongst other topics.
Some of the micro finance banks and NGOs in attendance were Care for the physically Challenged and Bank of Agriculture Rural Business Initiative, (BOARBI).
Participants were drawn from Awka North, Anyamelum, Orumba North, Anambra East and Idemili South local government areas.
02. Orumba North endorses Obiano for second tenure. The 16 communities of Orumba North Council Area of the state have endorsed Governor Willie Obiano for a second term in office.
The endorsement came during a Mega Rally and grand reception organized for the Governor in Nanka.
It was a gathering of renowned political heads and grassroots mobilizers in Orumba North, as nkwo agu school field, Nanka, venue of the event was filled to capacity with Ndi Orumba North who turned out enmasse to receive the Governor.
The 18 wards that constitute the Council area were fully represented in their numbers and showed their solidarity with the governor with chants of support and fireworks as he moved round the stands to acknowledge their cheers.
The people first passed a vote of confidence on the Governor before they pledged their endorsement for the Governor’s second term bid.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Governor Obiano expressed appreciation to people of Orumba North for the endorsement, adding that it was a pointer to the people’s general acceptance of the leadership model of his government.
The governor while assuring them of his administration’s resolve to continue to provide the people dividends of democracy, revealed that the state government is spending over 450 million naira in connecting the State through Ufuma to the Power Station at Oji River, adding that with the financial commitment it has made already, government is hopeful that the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, will energize the newly installed cables soon.
He harped on the need for the people to support his administration especially in its efforts to keep the state afloat in the face of the present economic recession, assuring them that his government is doing the right things to cushion the burden of the recession on Ndi Anambra.
The Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Raymond Obieri while welcoming the governor to the council area, said it is the unanimous decision of the people to lean their weight behind him because of his outstanding performance so far in governing the state.
The Convener of the event, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo in his remarks, said the ceremony has become apt to repay the governor for his benevolence towards people of Orumba North.
In an address on behalf of the Council, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the event, Mr Alphonsus Muogbo pointed out that the main reason for the reception was to identify with the governor’s laudable achievements in governance and to wholeheartedly express their support for him come 2017.
In their separate remarks, a stakeholder from Nanka, Chief Ikechukwu Ezenwankwo and the APGA Chairman, Oko Ward One, Chief Patrick Mejulu who described APGA as the only political party Ndigbo has, said continuity is critical in 2017 to ensure that the laudable programmes of the present administration are completed and sustained.
Official endorsement of the governor,reception of decampees into APGA as well as cultural performance by a masquerade troupe formed the highpoints of the event.

03. Ufuma Integrated Rice Project Ready For Commissioning.

The Ufuma Integrated Rice Project in Orumba North Council of Anambra state will soon be commissioned for increased rice production in the state.
The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano disclosed this while commissioning the Orumba North Rural Electrification project at the premises of the Holy Trinity Church, Ufuma this afternoon.
He acknowledged that the Rice project when commissioned would be the second largest in the country, and would have facilities for both rice production, processing and other value chain as well as have an outgrower scheme through which other rice farmers in the locality would be provided improved seedlings for better and enhanced yield.
According to the governor, when the project fully comes on stream with the outgrowers initiative, the state’s rice production capacity would increase to 400,000 metric tons, surpassing its consumption capacity of 300,000 metric tons.
Gov Obiano expressed hope that the electrification project which runs on a dedicated feeder designed to serve only the Orumba area, would help boost socio-economic activities and give impetus to his administration’s security efforts in the area.
Earlier in his address, the Executive Director of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Dr Steve Dike said it was important that the people understood clearly their role in ensuring that the project achieves its purpose which he noted include prompt payment of their electricity bills and protecting power cables and other facilities.
The Commissioner for Power and Domestic Water Development, Mr Obi Nwankwo in his remarks stated that the State government will soon commence the rehabilitation of all water projects across the state, and hailed the vision of Gov Obiano in bringing about visible transformation in the rural communities through numerous development projects.
The Member representing Orumba North Constituency in the State Assembly, Mr Romanus Obi expressed delight that despite the harsh economic weather, the governor has harkened to the call of Ndi Orumba for electricity, describing him as a passionate leader.
