Borehole area at the Abattoir
By Kingsley Ezekwelu : Gov Willie Obiano has continued the inspection of all ongoing projects of his administration, including the construction of a modern abattoir complex at Amansea in Awka North Council Area. The project which was being executed by the State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, would to be managed by the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export when completed.
Already, two main structures housing the Dirty Section where killed cows are left to bleed, the Cattle Wash Section and the wholesale section had been completed.
Also completed was the Oven Section for skin processing while a major borehole project was still under construction.
Speaking after he inspected the project, Gov Obiano revealed that the objective for the Abbatoir was to sanitize the entire meat slaughtering, processing and distribution system in the state to meet global standards, and disclosed that his government aims to replicate the project in 6 locations across the state.
According to him, the project has the capacity to slaughter 40 cows daily, which was the meat consumption capacity of the entire population in Awka Capital Territory .
The Governor further explained that through the project and the Lynden Poultry Project, his government intends to checkmate diseases associated with improper and unhygienic meat processing by ensuring that meat sold to Ndi Anambra are prepared in the best hygienic format.
Gov Obiano assured that his government was committed to completing the project within a record time.
The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Mark Okoye observed that aside its health prospects, the project would create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for Ndi Anambra and maintained that through its strategic engagements with development partners, the present administration will continue to initiate programmes that will have positive bearing on the lives of the people.
