The people of Unubi, Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State trooped out in great numbers with dancing groups to welcome Governor Willie Obiano as he flagged off the construction of hospital project in the community.

The project was the community’s choice of project in the N 20 million choose – your – project community initiative by the state government.

Speaking to the people, Governor Obiano said the project when completed before January next year, would assist in delivery of health services to the people.

Governor Obiano re-emphasized the suspension by his administration of all illegal taxes, as well as Illegal fees in junior and senior government secondary schools in the state.

He however urged the people to embark on micro and macro farming to cushion the effects of the present economic crunch in the country.

In his speech, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Greg Obi noted that Unubi community had since longed for the opportunity of having a government project as most projects in the community were built by community efforts.

Mr Obi said when completed, the hospital would house out patients ward, male and female wards, labour and examination rooms, offices and consultancy rooms for doctors as well as  conveniences among others.

In his address, the President General of Unubi, Dr Josiah Okonkwo, said “Today is a great day in the history of Nnubi for it marks the beginning of the realization of the dream of our people to have a functional hospital. Hospital project has been the topmost need of the people of Unubi. As of today, Unubi as a community is suffering immensely as a result of non availability of a good hospital in the town, and even around our neighborhood. All we have is a Health Center (which is located within this premises) and a Health Post. Our Health Center is manned by nurses and likewise the Health Post. No doctor ever visited any of the health centers. The community on its own built and equipped the doctor’s quarters which is also located within this premises but till date, no doctor has ever visited the center. ”

Dr Okonkwo pleaded with the Governor to give directives to the contractor handling the 7km Unubi – Akwaihedi Road to expedite work on the project saying that about 50% of the road had been completed. He pleaded also for the construction of the 1km road that linked Unubi with Ezinifite Aguata .

While commending the Governor for his prompt payment of salaries to workers, the President General noted that Governor Obiano came to the State when it was on the verge of collapse due to security threats characterized by kidnapping, manslaughter, burglary among others. He expressed happiness that through the efforts of the Governor, Anambra a State is today, the safest state in the country.

In his remarks, the member representing Nnewi South constituency in the State House of Assembly, Barr Kingsley Iruba described Governor Obiano as running a people’s oriented government.

Hon Iruba stressed that the community based project would empower the people of the community by creating direct and indirect Jobs to fight recession.

The Governor equally visited a new born baby delivered at the community health center, which coincided with his official visit to the community.

02. ANAMBRA GOVT TO INVESTIGATE EKWULUMMILI TRAGEDY

The Anambra State Government has announced that it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the bizarre death of six children -all boys, from the Oramalu family of Ekwulumili community in Nnewi South Council Area, who were alleged to be victims of food poisoning.

The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano revealed this when he received in audience  the parents of the deceased children at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia recently.

Parents of the late children, Apostle Chuks and Mrs Rita Oramalu from Isingwu Village, Ekwulumili had on arrival at the Governor’s Lodge, held a closed-door meeting with the Governor, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr Afam Mbanefo and his Women’s Affairs Counterpart, Dr Victoria Chikwelu.

Speaking shortly after the meeting, Gov Obiano disclosed that he has directed the State Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter in order to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the highly disturbing incident. He said the State owes it to the memory of the children to ensure that they did not die in vain.

He further revealed that the State had assisted the family bury their dead as well as pay for their accumulated hospital bills.

The Governor explained that the meeting was to discuss with the bereaved couple to see how government could support them in their farming business as a way of alleviating their sorrows.

This he noted, would not only ensure that they come out of mourning early enough but also help them pick up the broken pieces of their lives and move ahead.

Apostle Chuks Orammalu, father of the deceased children narrated how the unfortunate incident happened, saying he was still in shock as to how someone could mete out such act of inhumanity to his family for whatever reason.

He thanked the Governor for coming to their rescue in providing for the burial expenses of the children and investigating the incident which he believed was man made. He prayed God to reward him immensely.

It would be recalled that the 6 children who were of the same parents died in July this year after eating the food they prepared by themselves after they returned from school. They were earlier this month buried in their hometown, Ekwulumili in a ceremony which the Governor attended. He was represented by the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Dr Chikwelu.

The Nnewi Amalgamated Traders Association, NATA , has honoured the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano with an award as “the Most Investor Friendly Governor in Nigeria”.

The award according to the traders was in recognition of the Governor’s dynamic governance and developmental blueprints, especially in the simultaneous development of every community in the state.

The award which was presented in a grand reception organized by NATA, was also heralded by massive endorsement of the Governor for the next governorship election.

Receiving the award, the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano disclosed that he had directed the 61 markets in the state to choose a project which would not cost more than N10 million for the state government to embark on in its bid to extend development to markets.

The Governor revealed that the state government would commence construction of the projects in each market as soon as the State House of Assembly passes the 2017 budget.

Chief Obiano noted that his administration would soon embark on the construction of all the dilapidated roads in Nnewi, irrespective of economic crunch and the meagre resources which the state government is receiving from the federation account.

He also stressed that his government would not relent in paying workers salaries, leave allowances and other benefits accruing to them .

In his address, the Chairman of Nnewi Amalgamated Traders Association, Chief Edward Muozom stated that the governor had achieved spectacular feats in attracting foreign direct investments to the tune of $ 3.6 billion to our state, thereby placing Anambra in a vantage position as the first choice investment destination in West Africa.

Chief Muozom expressed happiness that the state government has attracted over $150 million investments in rice production as exemplified with the Coshed Farm Anaku which had not only provided jobs,but also closed the wide gap between rice production and its demand in the state.

“Despite the economic recession which had almost crippled governance in most states, you have through your administrative savvy and as an outstanding patriot ensured that our dear Anambra State has not suffered such calamity or fate.” he said.

Chief Mouzom in addition commended the governor for the three flyovers at Awka ,which had become an iconic landmark in Nigeria and a potent insignia for an emerging cosmopolitan city, as well as the road construction that had linked major cities in the state.

Enumerating their challenges, the chairman listed the strategic Modibe, Timber market access road, linking three major markets such as Timber, Building materials and Agboedo United Markets as a major hindrance to traders in Nnewi due to its poor state.

He also pleaded for provision of security vehicles to enable them provide surveillance to the nine markets in Nnewi.

In his remarks, the Coordinator of the occasion, Mr Martin Ndujekwu commended the governor for his efforts in ameliorating the sufferings of indigent traders in the state, by attracting the attention of federal government to carve out avenues to support manufacturers , so as to improve production and create more employment opportunities.

The highlights of the event were presentation of award to Governor Obiano as the Most Investor Friendly Governor in Nigeria, as well as display of various cultural dances.

Present at the occasion were government officials, captains of industries and many sons and daughters of Nnewi.
