Otuocha, Feb. 9, 2018 -- UNICEF WASH consultant in Anambra East Local Government Area (LGA), Mrs I Ominyi has called on communities in the area to achieve `free open defecation’ status.
Mrs Ominyi made the call during a ceremony to mark World Toilet Day, organised by UNICEF in Anambra East LGA.
She noted that Water Safety Plan organised by UNICEF on how the communities purify their water was on course.
``Anambra State has proved to be the only state that has started implementation of water safety plan.
Mrs Helen Offor, coordinator, Anambra East WASH advised the people on how an individual could afford modern toilet facility.
She urged communities to contact WASH units with problems relating to their boreholes; she also enjoined them to be security conscious.
The Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East LGA, Mr Pius Ifeadi expressed his gratitude to WASH unit for their efforts that would make the area to achieve open defecation free status before the end of the year.
Ifeadi said the area was facing many challenges that include a lack of access to clean water, and poor sanitation, which could cause spread of diseases.
He, however, advised all stakeholders to join the campaign against open defecation.
