Ndi-Anambra urged to embrace subsistence agriculture for food security.
The Anambra state House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the people of the state to embrace subsistence agriculture as a way of ensuring food security and checkmating the skyrocketing prices of food items.
The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by the member representing Awka South one constituency, Pharmacist Dr Nnamdi Okafor during plenary today in Awka.
Dr Okafor identified subsistence agriculture as the growing of food to feed oneself and family members, which he said, is consistent with Governor Willie Obiano’s development programmes for the state.
He noted that since no nation could assure food security without being self-sufficient in food production, it is necessary for Ndi-Anambra to embrace subsistence agriculture against the backdrop of skyrocketing prices of food items in the market.
Dr Okafor however observed that the rise of oil price is making agriculture very attractive for alternative wealth creation with a view to quenching hunger.
Supporting the motion, the member representing Anambra East Pharmacist Obinna Emenaka and his Anambra West counterpart, Chief Victor Jideofor Okoye described the motion as timely especially now that food items is out of the reach of common man.
The Deputy Speaker Hon Harford Oseke read the resolution of the House and urged the people embrace subsistence agriculture.
