Awka, Jan. 21, 2020 (MOI) Anambra State Government has erected barricades to stop articulated trucks from plying the Amawbia Bypass.

This is aimed at forestalling carnage on the road.

The barricades were installed at the Amawbia Y-junction and at the flyover end of the bypass.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after an-on-the-spot inspection visit to the area, Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Christian Madubuko said that the move was to discourage articulated trucks from using the road.

He added that government was desirous of the need to ensure safety of life and property of those either residing or carrying on businesses close to the road.

The commissioner observed that allowing articulated vehicles on the road could expose residents to risks in the event of petroleum tanker mishaps as had been witnessed in recent past.

``We have decided to install the barricades to stop trucks laden with goods from plying this road to reduce traffic congestion and secure our people.

``Some of these roads were not built for big trucks to ply; so they should take alternative routes. We want to avoid frequent movement and fall of petroleum tankers on the road.’’

He, then, cautioned against any attempt by road users to dismantle the barricades, adding that anybody caught would be arraigned for trial. (MOI)
