By John Ndu :
Awka, Sept. 6, 2020 (MOI) Not less than 151 air-conditioned Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) have been presented to Traditional rulers in Anambra State by the State Government.
All the vehicles were produced by Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, Nnewi.
Anambra has not less than 177 communities and the cars are supposed to be of equal number but that some traditional rulers might have transited -- joined their ancestors -- while some communities were yet to produce traditional rulers.
The event, which took place at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, attracted dignitaries from all walks of life, including former governors.
While presenting the keys, Gov. Willie Obiano said his administration had the traditional institutions of the state in high esteem.
He noted that those who received the cars were distinguished royal fathers, who were duly recognised and provided certificates of recognition, in line with the Anambra State Chieftaincy Laws.
``It is expected that the air conditioned Innoson SUVs that we are presenting to them, will be useful for the royal fathers in coordinating affairs within their various domains.
``I, therefore, urge you all to continue to keep the peace in your various domains and by extension throughout our dear state,’’ Gov. Obiano said.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mr Greg Obi said the Governor had uplifted the good image of the royal institution in the state, making them prestigiously involved in the decision making process of the state.
National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Sir Victor Ike Oye, urged the traditional rulers to always remain loyal to the government and ensure adequate security within their communities.
Sir Oye said that Gov. Obiano had recorded excellence in governance, pointing out that irrespective of present economic challenges; he had been able to meet the expectations of the people.
``APGA government has transformed Anambra State. The present administration has projected the state into limelight.
``The Governor pays salaries, pension and gratuities regularly and amid the economic challenges, he embarked on construction of gigantic projects, such as International City Airport and the 10,000 capacity International Conference Centre in Awka.
``I urge all to support the Obiano administration to attract more meaningful and sustainable projects for the betterment of the people.’’
Chairman, Traditional Rulers' Council, Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, commended Gov. Obiano for his unprecedented cordial relationship with the traditional institutions in the state.
Igwe Achebe called for maximum support for the Government to move the state forward. (MOI)
