By David Okpala/Stella Okpala :
Akpo (Aguata LGA), June 1, 2020 (MOI) Chairman Obinikpa Agbaelu, Akpo, Mr Anthony Nsofor has called on Ndi Anambra to support government fight to check erosion menace.
``Anambra State Terrain is prone to erosion with not less than 900 erosion sites; it demands that all hands be on deck to manage the situation.’’
Nsofor made the call while inspecting work at a catchment pit on College Road, Agbaelu Village Akpo.
``We are here in respect of government directive of environmental cleanup for the month of May.
``Although we work on this road on weekly basis. We also call emergency each time there is a heavy rain.
``If not for the effort of villagers, it cannot have been possible for anyone to pass through this road now,’’ Mr Nsofor said.
He urged the people to desist from depositing wastes into drainages.
``If erosion eats up houses, farmland, economic trees and even lives, by the time government gets to hear it, people around have counted their losses.
``So, environmental protection is in the interest of people within the environment,” he observed.
Nsofor noted that government had the responsibility of protecting lives and properties of her citizens but not without the support of those to be protected.
According to him, the Agrarian Road known as College Road leads to Ikpa, farmland of Akpo Community. The road is currently under construction solely at the expense of Agbaelu Improvement Union.
``It has not been easy for Agbaelu people, both at home and abroad. We are struggling to get to some level before the rains but the emergence of COVID-19 lockdown hindered our effort.’’
He urged government to visit the road as well as support his people
``Government may be finding it difficult this time, as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) is in decline as a result of Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world today.
``The state of College Road, Agbaelu Akpo is life-threatening and demands urgent attention,” he observed. (MOI)
