Awka, Feb. 8, 2018 -- The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu says Anambra State Government is willing to implement the Local Government Autonomy in the state.
The speaker, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Sir Hartford Oseke, said this in Awka while addressing a coalition civil society groups at the assembly ground.
``The issue of local government autonomy is not peculiar to Anambra State; it takes the decision of the majority in the House for a bill to be passed.
``The issue will feature in the next public hearing in less than a month, but it is not a decision to be taken by the Speaker alone," the Speaker said.
The Anambra State President, Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees, Mr Jerry Nnubia, said that their visit was the second on the issue of LG autonomy in Anambra.
``We have returned again to register our displeasure at delays and failure to pass the bill establishing LG autonomy in the state.
``The House will write their name ``on sands of time’’ by passing the bill of the LG autonomy into law,’’ Nnubia said.
The Spokesman of the Community Empowerment Network (COMEN), Mr Eloka Okafor, enjoined the assembly to expedite action on the bill.
``The House should swiftly pass the bill into law because there is no need for wide consultation, public hearings, and the likes on the matter,’’ Okafor said.
