He commended captains of all the teams present, over the manner in which each of them picked their opponents.
``Today is unique and historical for sports in Anambra State and Nigeria at Large.
``We want to use this tournament to create excitement and hope for the young children and make them to believe that they can be like the big players they watch on television.
``Some of the children are stars in their schools already; so, we want to bring them together and pick the best among them.
``We hope that in years to come, we will have some of them in the Flying Eagles and the senior National team, the Super Eagles of Nigeria,’’ Mr Oli stressed.
The captain of Metropolitant College, Vincent Onwualu said: ``I am pleased with the draws. I thank the governor for giving us the opportunity to showcase our talents.
``I see my team going into the finals. We have trained well and we hope the result will go our way,’’ Onwualu said.
Captain of Bubendorf, Johnbosco Chiemelie, boasted, ``the cup is ours to take. We are not going to play a second fiddle to any team.
``We are going to defeat our opponents in the games because we have been training for a long time and we have experienced players in the team.
``We have faced tougher oppositions in the past and the team we played in the quarter finals was a difficult side but we were able to overcome them via penalty shootout,’’ he said.
The State Director of Sports Mrs Faith Okwunna in an interview commended Gov. Willie Obiano for providing them with all the necessary support to organise the competition.
``This tournament is
a new dawn in Anambra with this revived age grade soccer tournament. Hopefully
this will become an annual feature,’’ she added. (MOI)
