Anambra State Government has intensified erosion and flood-control works at Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government Area (LGA).
Inspecting the project, Gov. Willie Obiano said, the intervention was aimed at reclaiming portions of the area ravaged by erosion and to control the huge flood channels that was not properly diverted.
Gov. Obiano, at the erosion site, noted that the intervention by the government salvaged the road from splitting the communities into two.
He added that the work embarked upon by his administration had also saved nearby buildings from being subsumed by the gully.
``The erosion threatened to cut off the road linking Ezinifite with neighbouring communities in Imo State.
``The gully, which emerged last year at Nkwozu-Abanator area of Ezinifite had pulled down walls and buildings, sweeping away farmlands and economic trees,” Obiano said.
Mr Adolph Izuegbu, Contractor In Charge of erosion-control work, said that flooding in the axis would be discharged, about two kilometres into the Ulasi River to solve the problem.
Mr Izuegbu stressed that the job would be completed within three months by his firm.
He expressed happiness that residents, who were sacked by the erosion, had returned after the initial intervention on the site.
Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi South LGA, Mr Felix Odumegwu said that the deployment of resources to tackle the disaster brought smiles to the faces of residents.
President-General, Ezinifite Community, Chief Egwuoyibo Okoye said the people were happy over speedy response of government in combating the menace.
Former Commissioner for Information, Chief Maja Umeh and a stakeholder in the area, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka noted that the work would alleviate the problems posed by the gully.
