Anambra Government hails Armed Forces for readiness to defend nation

By John Ndu Awka, Jan. 17, 2019 (MOI) Government of Anambra State has praised members of the Armed Forces for ever being ready to sacrifice to save the Nation whenever faced with emergency situation. ``We commend them for their supreme sacrifice for the nation. We will remember them always,’’ Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra said while marking the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The event which took place at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka witnessed Parade by the Nigerian Army, Navy and Nigerian Legion, at which Gov. Obiano inspected a guard of honour. Gov. Obiano said the day was significantly set aside to remember and honour the sacrifices rendered by the Armed Forces at which some lost their lives in discharge of their duties. The governor noted that the armed forces made the nation proud in recent efforts to arrest insecurity and other forms of insurgency across the country, particularly in the North East. ``This is an opportunity to encourage the soldiers who are fighting to maintain the peace and unity of the nation, especially those that are fighting the terrorists in the Northern parts of the country. Secretary Anambra State Branch, Nigerian Legion, retired Major Ben Agbogu said that retired soldiers were being neglected. He, then, appealed for improved welfare for retired soldiers and families of fallen heroes as well as provision of job opportunities for the younger retired soldiers. Present at the event were State Heads of Security Agencies, top Government officials, Traditional Rulers, Captains of industries and Religious leaders. The traditional laying of wreath, firing of 21 salute and release of pigeons as a sign of peace in honour of the fallen heroes formed part of the event. (MOI) CN/RNI/TON ==========
