By John Ndu : Governor Willie Obiano has described as false, rumours in the social media that a trailer-load of arms ordered by Muslims arrived the state earlier this week.
Governor Obiano was speaking at Saint Andrew, Onitsha during the 50th Birthday Anniversary celebration of the Anglican Bishop on the Niger, Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo.
According to the rumours, the trailer which had the arms hidden under tomatoes and yam tubers which it was allegedly carrying, had arrived Odukwe street near Nwanyi Imo junction, Otolo Nnewi Thursday evening.
Governor Obiano who debunked the rumour, said on getting the security alert he had immediately ordered a 100-man crackteam from the State Security paraphernalia to invade and thoroughly search the entire area, after which it was confirmed that no single arm arrived the area.
While urging the people to discountenance the rumour, The Governor Obiano assured the people that security remains topmost in his agenda.
The governor further revealed that 100 well-trained security personnel have been deployed as intelligence officers to Onitsha, Obosi, Nkpor and Umuoji in a renewed effort to rid the areas of criminals.
Congratulating Bishop Nwokolo on his 50th birthday celebration, Governor Obiano prayed God to grant him the grace and strength to continue to lead the flock of Christ in the Diocese.
Former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, represented at the event by a former Minister of Power, Rev. Prof Chinedu Nebo in a remark, described Bishop Nwokolo as a devout man of God guided by exemplary humility and selflessness through which he has led many youths to God.
In a review of the book written by Bishop Nwokolo titled “parenting in the Old Testament, contemporary patterns, challenges and solutions for Nigeria, the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma Soludo said the family is the basic unit of character formation, noting that proper parenting rooted in the word of God will ensure better citizenry and by extension, a better society.
Professor Soludo however harped on the need for the Church to be alive to her responsibility of providing the moral standards for parents to adopt, adding that the book poses a functional manual that will ensure that the society gets it right at the family which is the foundation level of child upbringing.
The Chairman on the occasion and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka said the celebration is unique, noting that celebrant has achieved so much at a young age in advancing the cause of evangelism in the Diocese.
