The Anambra state House of Assembly has called on the Executive arm of govt to evacuate refuse heap at Ugwuorie Market – St Michael’s Church junction Ozubulu in Ekwusigo council area of the state.

The House passed the resolution through a motion sponsored by the member representing Ekwusigo constituency, Mr Onyebuchi Offor and 16 others during the plenary in Awka.

The lawmaker while citing the relevant section of Anambra state Waste Management Authority 2015, stressed the function of Anambra state Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) to include proper collection and disposal of waste for the overall health benefits of Ndi Anambra.

Mr Onyebuchi Offor observed that the refuse heap at Ugwuorie market Ozubulu has caused many health hazards to his constituents hence the need for the state government through ASWAMA to quickly evacuate it, bearing in mind that the lawmaker had evacuated a similar refuse heap in his constituency that caused him hundreds of thousands of naira.

Supporting the motion, Hon Ikem Uzoezie of Aguata 2 constituency and his Anambra East counterpart, Obinna Emenaka while urging government agency to evacuate the said refuse, also advised Ozubulu residents to be environmentally friendly in dumping refuse at the appropriate quarters.

They also enjoined the Ministry of Environment to address all refuse challenges in the state, as waste management is contained in this year’s budget.

On his part, Barr Kingsley Iruba representing Nnewi South 2 constituency observed that church and markets are not the appropriate place for refuse dump, adding that where it occurs daily should be evacuated everyday as a way of generating money to the state.

The Deputy Speaker Mr. Harford Oseke who presided over the plenary read out the resolution of the House.
