By Paulinus Onah Ogbaru : The Assistant Corp Marshal in charge of the Special Unit, Mr. Victor Nwokolo has rated Anambra the most accident free state in the country. Mr Nwokolo made the Commendation at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Uli Campus, Anambra State while stressing the need for Officers of the Special Marshal Unit (SMU) to contribute their quota in ensuring that accidents and deaths resulting from road crashes are reduced to the barest minimum before the end of 2017.
Nwokolo while reminding the special marshals that road safety is a collective responsibility, urged them as stakeholders in the road safety business, to brace up noting that 21,000 regular workforce of the FRSC is not enough to face the challenges of road safety in the Nigerian roads.
He also called on the officers to carry road safety campaigns to churches, home, offices and markets in order to sensitize the populace on road safety procedures.
In his own remark during the event, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, Mr. Ajayi Sunday, commended the Special Marshal Unit for its strides in maintaining safety on the road and further urged them to improve so as to enable FRSC achieve its set target which is embedded in the motto, “Operation Reach All”, which aims at sensitizing the general public on the ideals of road safety.
“We have a strategic goal to achieve before the end of this year, we wish to reduce road crashes by 15% and fatality rate by 25%. It is a great task and the Special Marshal Unit is a major stakeholder which will help us to achieve this target,” he said.
The Coordinator of the Special Marshal Unit in Anambra State, Barr. Godwin Osaka, in his own remark, said the Special Marshal is doing well in Anambra State; adding that the purpose of the meeting was to appraise its performance in the previous quarter and come out with target on what to achieve in the next quarter.
Earlier in his goodwill message during the event, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, who was represented by Special Marshal Comrade Festus Chigozie Ntomchukwu (the PRO of the university), expressed joy that the institution was selected for the quarterly meeting; stating that it speaks a lot of positive things about the university.
